PROCEDURES
DCIS
DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ) are cancer cells that line the ducts of the breast. This is often a pre invasive cancer condition.
In DCIS laser treatment the patient is lightly sedated. The laser beam moves around the DCIS in order to obtain a clear margin of tissue. Using a beam of light instead of a knife for the skin incision, there is a small cosmetic result. The beam seals the surrounding area (blood vessels and lymphatics) around the DCIS as it removes the area in question. This sealing helps decrease the possible spreading of cancer cells into the patient’s blood vessels and lymphatics and results in less blood loss and little to no pain.
Immediately following the surgery, the area in question is sent for analysis to pathology.
In result, the laser procedure in painless, cosmetic and most importantly safer in preventing contaminated cancer cells from spreading during surgery.
Diagnosis by needle core biopsy can be in error due to small amount of tissue removed for analysis.
OTHER PROCEDURES
Lumpectomy
Laser removes questionable lump or calcifications of the breast. The lump removed is preserved for pathological diagnosis and margin evaluation. Benefits include less chance of error in diagnosis because of more complete removal of lump or calcifications as opposed to tissue sampling by a needle/core biopsy. There is no discomfort in the laser removal. There is less need for repetitive follow-up mammograms with increased radiation when laser surgery removes the lump.
Partial Mastectomy
The same procedure is used as above. A larger portion of tissue is removed.
Oncoloplastic Surgery
Reconstruction of breast is performed when indicated after breast conservational surgery (partial mastectomy) utilizing patient’s own breast tissues.
Gynecomastia
Removal of excessive benign growth of male breast tissue. Exceptional cosmetic benefits.
Tumor Specific
Surgery tailored to the extent of the disease.
Axillary Sentinel Node Dissection
Laser removal first area of lymph node spread.
Simple or Total Mastectomy
Laser removal of breast.
Axillary Node Dissection
More complete dissection of axillary lymph nodes when necessary. Benefits include sealed blood vessels and lymphatics, thereby reducing pain, swelling and drainage. There is a rapid return to normal activity.
Advanced Cancer
Standard and or alternative neoadjuvant (prior to surgery) therapies used in conjunction with the laser surgical treatment of advanced breast cancer.
