BENEFITS OF LASER SURGERY

In all breast procedures, laser surgery advantages are documented by finer incisions and a more cosmetic result. The laser reduces the potential spread of cancer cells in the breast by sealing blood vessels and lymphatics during the removal of tumors. The laser beam vaporizes and seals the area around the tumor that has been removed. The margins of the excised tumor are preserved for pathological analysis. The laser beam reduces pain, infection and drainage. The surrounding tissue is not traumatized as it with scalpel surgery (standard). This enables patients to literally walk off the operating room table and go on with their day.

 The benefits of lasers in breast cancer surgery were recognized by the Italian-American Cancer Society in 1987-1988. Vincent W. Ansanelli MD FACS was named 'Physician of the Year' for his pioneering of lasers in breast cancer.
